Clashes in al-Arrub as mourners bury man slain by Israeli forces

Clashes broke out between Palestinians and Israeli forces near Hebron on Saturday as mourners buried a man who was shot by Israeli forces that day before, a Ma'an reporter said.

The clashes broke out after mourners participated in funeral march for Eid Abd al-Kadir Fadhelat, who was killed Friday during a protest against Israel's Gaza offensive.

Palestinians chanted slogans condemning the Fadhelat's killing, in addition to slogans against Israel's assault on Gaza.

Dozens of Palestinians suffered from excessive tear gas inhalation as Israeli forces broke up the protest.

An Israeli army spokeswoman said "a few hundred (were) hurling rocks at Israeli forces, who responded with riot dispersal means," a term usually referring to tear gas, rubber-coated bullets, and stun grenades.

Israeli forces shot and killed Fadhelat, 28, just before sunset in al-Arrub Friday evening.

Red Crescent coordinator Mohammad Khamis Badawi said that Fadhelat was shot with several bullets in the chest and shoulder, and was taken to a hospital in Hebron but died before reaching the emergency room.

Badawi added that four others were injured with live bullets, and 22 with rubber-coated bullets in clashes that broke out after a demonstration in solidarity with Gaza.

An Israeli military spokeswoman said that several Palestinians "hurled rocks at soldiers" in the area and that one "attacked" a soldier and "attempted to snatch his weapon." The soldier subsequently shot and killed him.
